TO ALL AM ISRAEL
Coalition governments may be Israel’s inescapable fate, but whoever forms our next ruling coalition must know there are basic principles that cannot be bargained away in the interest of coalition-building, if Israel is to meet the mounting challenges to its physical and spiritual well being. Among the critical issues the next prime minister needs to address, here are a few that deserve immediate consideration;
- A law prohibiting the use of the IDF for any purpose other than the defense of the nation and its citizens. The IDF is not a police force or the political instrument of any government or party.
- A law curbing the power of the High Court to make decisions on matters pertinent to Israel’s national security, including the placement of its security fence, its border demarcations or the deployment of IDF forces.
- A law prohibiting the stationing of foreign or UN troops, including military contingents of the Palestinian Authority, in any area under Israeli control.
- The establishment of Israeli legal jurisdiction over Judea and Samaria.
- The prohibition of any further transfer of Israeli funds – direct or indirect - to Hamas or its agencies.
- Reinstatement of the prohibition against the release of any non-Israeli Arab prisoner convicted of the murder, or complicity in the murder, of an Israeli citizen
- A law making non-Israeli Arab prisoner rights directly conditional on reciprocal rights for Israelis held by Arab countries or military groups. First and foremost, this law would mandate unrestricted access to Israeli prisoners by the International Red Cross.
- Finally, as we approach the New Year, we must demand of the next Israel government an ironclad commitment to the continued unity and undivided sovereignty of Jerusalem, as our eternal capital.
